EVALUATING THE EFFECT OF SELENIUM IN PREVENTING ORAL MUCOSITIS: A RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL

Introduction: Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is one of the most common complications in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients thought to occur through oxidative stress. Selenium(Se) has attracted tremendous interest because its importance as antioxidant anti-inflammatory. Objectives: Evaluating effectiveness Se prevention radiation‐induced mucositis(OM). Patients methods: A randomized controlled clinical study was conducted on 40 undergoing radiotherapy at Department Clinical Oncology, Faculty medicine, Alexandria University, Egypt. were assigned equally either control group who received conventional preventive medications or test 200 mg selenium twice daily along with medications. All clinically evaluated for OM severity (objective assessment) pain (subjective day 1 radiotherapy, 14, 21 42. Results: There no significant difference comparing groups regarding mean score during 4 times assessment. Conclusion: The administration supplementation effect related World Health Organization (WHO) scale visual analogue scale(VAS) respectively.
